From Farm Stand to Table........
Regional Foods at Taste for the Arts
Organizations linking farmers and their produce with specialty chefs are springing up across the United States. They all share a philosophy which fosters a relationship supportive of local agriculture and also create a special culinary experience for people who come to enjoy the foods.
We strive to work with farmers with all our events sponsored by Hermann Farm & Museum.
We decorated the Country Fair with corn stalks and locally grown pumpkins, and served freshly squeezed lemonade and apple cider at or fall harvest event. We are hosting classes on how to make artisan cheese using local milk products from goats and cows, and at our December winter events you'll find us simmering locally grown root vegetables and meat products in cast iron while making our Lewis and Clark Bison stew. Chestnuts from a Missouri grower were roasted over an open fire at Christmas time.
This Summer we embrace this philosophy again by providing a similar venue for this culinary network to continue with the foods offered at this year's Taste For the Arts. We'll be serving locally harvested foods from area producers and food grown within 50 miles of the event, which exemplifies not only arts of the region, but foods of the region as well.

Taste For the Arts - Crafted To Inspire
Taste For the Arts 2011 is crafted to Inspire. Components of the exhibit will represent all the arts where the region becomes the muse and the Hofgarten the ultimate backdrop. Artists were selected who create art with a rural theme. Visitors will experience art using nature's treasures, clay, wood, fiber and glass. Watercolors of river scenes will rub elbows with farm photography of gentile draft horses framed in old barn wood. Music will be performed by The Buckhannon Brothers on Saturday with Wil Maring Saturday afternoon. The St Louis Wind Ensemble will play at the amphitheater for an evening event. The Buckhannons will return on Sunday afternoon with fiddlers and dance callers for an old fashioned barn dance in the Hofgarten courtyard along with weavers, potters, woodcarvers and regional cuisine that taps into the best of mid-west culinary arts.

Heirloom Seeds Collected for Organic Garden Layout
Research is ongoing as we create plans for our history gardens that represent early plantings of an 1860s farm. Future landscape designs will include a German kitchen garden, herb garden, pumpkin patch, an heirloom orchard with apples, peaches and plum trees and a wide selection of heirloom bean seeds, vegetables and selected perennial wildflowers appropriate for era cutting gardens.
A vineyard will be planted on the farm hilltop.
